Certification in Ontario Workplaces
In Ontario, any workplace with 20 or more employees on payroll, are required by law, to have a Safety Committee. At a minimum two members of that Committee must be Certified, one from Management and one non-management. Certification has two parts; Level I and Level II.
What is Certification 24-7, Safety Leaders?
Certification 24-7 is a Ministry of Labour approved online training program for certification of Joint Health and Safety Committee members in Ontario. It is our experience that Joint Health and Safety Committees operate more effectively when members have received the proper training and tools to carry out their duties.
Under Sec. 8(5) of the Act, training is required for health and safety representatives so they can effectively perform their duties. Our program meets this requirement and is the most effective way of ensuring that all committee members and safety representatives are trained. Certification 24-7 isn’t just for certifying JHSC members; this program can also be used for supervisor competency, demonstrating due diligence, teaching workplace inspection and accident investigation and more!.

Parts of the Program
Certification Level I: Health and Safety Basic Certification Training Level 1 has been developed by Dunk & Associates, approved by the Ministry of Labour and meets the Certification Training Program Standards. In Level I, there are 5 training modules and takes 8 to 10 hours to complete on average.
Certification Level II: Workplace Specific Hazard Training After successful completion of Level I, learners are required to complete Level II, which is workplace specific hazard training. This training will be determined by each workplace based on the results of the workplace hazard assessment conducted by the employer in consultation with the JHSC.
Why Certify Now?
With the upcoming Ministry of Labour changes to Certification in Ontario, there will be a significant fee increase when the new program is launched. The on-line training program is being upgraded and expanded significantly to meet the new requirements.
The largest expected change is in the amount of time it will take to complete Level 1 training. Course duration will be lengthened from 8-10 hours of training to 25-30 hours of training. It is also now widely understood that the new MOL Certification program will have an expiry with a significant time allotment for those currently certified, until their first renewal.
Now is the time to certify committee members, supervisors and safety representatives before the changes. Under the Act, the employer must pay for certification training. This means that by certifying now, your organization is saving 15-20 hours of wages per employee!
